CLINICAL BREAST EXAM

A clinical breast exam is an examination done by a physician. The Komen Foundation recommends that all women receive a clinical breast exam at least every three years beginning at age 20, and annually from age 40 on. This exam is typically done as a part of a general physical exam or as a separate exam for symptomatic women.

The CBE should include both a visual inspection of the breasts, looking for changes in the normal appearance of the breast such as size, shape, or color, as well as a physical exam of the breasts. If your doctor does not examine your breasts, ask for it. This is a good time to ask your doctor any questions that you might have about doing your breast self exam (BSE), common breast changes, or your risk assessment (your chance of developing breast cancer).

MAMMOGRAPHY

Mammograms are recommended annually for all women beginning at age 40. A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast. It has the ability to detect breast cancers before they can be felt. The mammogram is the best screening tool widely available to detect breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages.
