Twenty-two organizations throughout Oregon and SW Washington received a total of $600,000 in Community and Rural Transportation Grants, to provide services for more than 31,000 men and women who are medically underserved due to language and cultural barriers, financial difficulties and transportation issues. The Affiliate gives the majority of Community Grants to organizations supporting diverse demographics, including Native American, Asian, Hispanic and Russian communities. Funds from the Community and Transportation Grants provide: survivor and co-survivor support services; breast health education and training to promote early detection; and general transportation and lodging services for rural communities. In addition, the Affiliate awarded three special grants, totaling over $700,000, to Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), the Oregon Breast and Cervical Cancer Program, and the Washington Breast and Cervical Health Program. OHSU's grant funds education and training for physicians, nurses and physician's assistants on Vertical Strip clinical breast exam procedures. Both the Oregon and Washington screening programs provide mammograms and other services to low-income, uninsured women over 40 years old.
