Komen Oregon & Washington Affiliate Representatives Descend on the Oregon Capitol

April 18th was a day for legislators at Oregon's State Capitol to reflect on the issue of breast cancer and to be reminded that Oregon and Washington have the highest rates of breast cancer in the nation.

Members of the Komen Oregon & SW Washington Affiliate's Advocacy Committee, Board Members and staff hosted their first Lobby Day in the Oregon State Capitol, where they met one-on-one with key legislators and staff, handing out Komen ribbons and information and reminding them of the role Komen played in passing HB 2498 and HB 2497 in 2005.

HB 2498 made Oregon the first state in the nation to require insurance providers to allow women age 18 and older to receive an annual clinical breast exam by a doctor or clinician. HB 2497 removed the sunset clause (which had required passage every six years) of the health insurance coverage requirement in Oregon for mammograms, pap smear examinations, pelvic examinations, and childbirth and pregnancy expenses.

It is important to maintain relationships with legislators and other community members, and this local Lobby Day was a great way to continue our visibility at the Capitol.
