Sandi B.'s Story

A Survivor’s Race for the Cure® Journey

I have walked in various Race for the Cures since 1992.  In 1996, Race for the Cure became a special event for me as it was that year that I became a breast cancer survivor.  I was also diagnosed with a second breast cancer, not a recurrence, at the age of 48.

Life has brought new challenges to me and walking in the Race for the Cure gives me purpose, another place to travel to, and the walks are so much fun!

Besides participating in the Komen Portland Race for the Cure, my goal has been to walk in a different Race every year.  I’ve walked in Races in Golden Gate Park in the San Francisco with my son, through Central Park in New York City’s Race with my sister; I’ve walked around the Coliseum in Rome and down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC (the largest Race for the Cure in the United States).  Last year I walked with a breast cancer survivor friend for her 15th anniversary in Honolulu, Hawaii’s Race for the Cure.  Also, last year I formed a team in Portland called “Vickie’s Hula Hussies” to celebrate the 70th birthday of a special friend and breast cancer survivor.

Next month, I will be walking in New York City’s Race for the Cure and then a few weeks later will be in Frankfurt, Germany to participate in their Race.  In October I will be walking in Phoenix, Arizona.
